Rtveli — Join the Grape Harvest at Guest House Akutsa
Every autumn, something happens in Georgia that visitors rarely get to see up close: rtveli, the grape harvest. It is not a festival staged for tourists — it is the most important working season of the year for anyone connected to wine, and in the Keda valley, it still happens the way it always has: by hand, with the whole family, followed by a table that goes on far longer than the work itself. At Guest House Akutsa, we open this season to our guests. Here is what rtveli actually involves, and how you can take part. --- What Rtveli Actually Is Rtveli takes place in autumn, typically from mid-September through October, timed to when the grapes in the Keda valley reach full ripeness. Unlike the mechanised harvests common elsewhere, grapes here are picked by hand — a practice that has less to do with sentiment and more to do with the terrain. These are mountain vineyards, small plots on sloped ground, and hand-picking is simply the only method that works. Rtveli is as much a social event as an agricultural one. Neighbours help neighbours. Extended family returns from Batumi or Tbilisi for the weekend. The work is genuinely hard, but it is done in company, and it ends, always, with food and wine made from last year's harvest. --- Join the Harvest Guests staying with us during harvest season can join the picking directly — baskets in hand, working alongside the family in the vineyard rows near the Keda Wine Factory. No experience is necessary. You will be shown what to look for, how to cut the clusters, and how to handle them so they arrive at the press undamaged. It is physical work, done outdoors, usually in the cool of the morning. Most guests describe it as one of the most memorable parts of their stay — not because it is glamorous, but because it is real. --- The Pressing After picking, the grapes go to the press. Traditional methods are still used in this region — in some cases, this still means treading the grapes by foot, a practice that has continued in mountain Adjara long after it disappeared elsewhere. Guests are welcome to take part in this too. The fresh grape juice at this stage — unfermented, sweet, and completely different from finished wine — is itself worth tasting. It is often served immediately, straight from the press. --- Culinary Masterclass — Cook With What the Harvest Brings Autumn in Keda is not only about grapes. It is chestnut season, fruit season, the point in the year when the kitchen has the most to work with. Our culinary masterclass during rtveli season incorporates the harvest directly — dishes made with fresh grapes, walnuts, and seasonal produce that simply is not available the rest of the year. Two to three hours, hands in the dough, cooking traditional Adjarian dishes shaped by what the season provides. Price: 50 GEL per person (only for guests staying overnight at Guest House Akutsa) --- Wine Tasting at Keda Wine Factory Rtveli season is also the best time to visit the Keda Wine Factory — you can see the full cycle, from grapes arriving at the door to the previous year's harvest being poured for tasting. The grape varieties grown in this valley are specific to the mountain climate here, distinct from Kakheti's lowland wines, and there is no better context for understanding that difference than watching the harvest happen in front of you. Local wine also available directly at Guest House Akutsa: 15 GEL --- A Season Worth Planning For Rtveli is not a performance. It is agricultural work that happens whether or not visitors are present, and that is exactly what makes it worth experiencing. If you want to understand Adjarian wine — and Adjarian hospitality — at its most direct, autumn is the season to visit. --- Join the Harvest Telegram: @raultsintsadze WhatsApp: +995577225289 Website: akutsaresosort.ge Guest House Akutsa — Village Akutsa, Keda Municipality, Adjara, Georgia 40km from Batumi
