Mushroom Picking in the Mountains of Adjara — Come to the Forest with Us
Published on
By Raul Tsintsadze, host at Guest House Akutsa
Every autumn the forests around Akutsa fill with mushrooms. If you have always wanted to go mushroom picking but don't know where to go or which ones are edible, come with us. We take you into the forest ourselves, show you the places locals have used for years, and teach you which mushrooms are good and which ones to avoid.

How the day goes
1. In the morning we set off together from the guesthouse into the mountain forests, where local families have picked for generations.
2. On the way we show you where to look: at the foot of trees, in moss, under fallen leaves.
3. We teach you how to tell edible mushrooms from dangerous ones, and how to pick them properly, with a knife, so they grow back next year.
4. At the end we check the basket together: every mushroom is inspected by your local host.
No experience needed. This day is made for first-time pickers.

Safety comes first
Some poisonous mushrooms look very much like edible ones. So our rule is simple: nobody eats a mushroom until the host has checked it. If in doubt, it stays in the forest.
