Best Time to Visit Adjara — A Season by Season Guide

"When should I visit?" is the question we hear most often, and the honest answer is: it depends what you want. The Adjara highlands change character completely with the seasons — what makes June extraordinary is not what makes October extraordinary, and both are worth knowing about before you book. Here is an honest, season-by-season breakdown. --- Spring (April to June) — Waterfalls at Their Peak Spring is when the mountains come back to life. Snowmelt feeds every river and waterfall in the region, meaning Makhuntseti, Merisi, and Dzenwmani are all running at their fullest and most dramatic. The forests turn a deep, saturated green. Wildflowers begin appearing on Goderdzi Pass by late May. This is also lambing season in the highlands — you will see young animals in the pastures around Keda, and the pace of village life visibly shifts with the season. Weather: Mild, with regular rain. Bring a waterproof layer. Best for: Waterfall chasing, photography, seeing the landscape at its most vivid. --- Summer (July to August) — Long Days, Full Access Summer is when everything is open and accessible. Goderdzi Pass is fully clear and covered in alpine wildflowers. Days are long, evenings on the terrace are warm but not oppressive — the altitude keeps Keda noticeably cooler than Batumi even in August. This is the busiest season, though "busy" in the Adjara highlands is nothing like Batumi's beaches in August. It simply means more activity, more available tours, and the best weather for horseback riding, rafting, and multi-day exploration. Weather: Warm days, cool mountain evenings. Best for: Full activity range — rafting, horseback riding, zipline, Goderdzi Pass, long outdoor days. --- Autumn (September to November) — Harvest, Colour, and Quiet Autumn might be the season locals love most, and the one visitors know least about. The forests turn gold and copper. Mushroom foraging season begins in the beech forests. The grape harvest happens at the Keda Wine Factory. Chestnuts fall and get roasted over fires in the evenings. Fruit trees throughout the village — apple, pear, quince, persimmon — are heavy and generous. It is also quieter. Fewer visitors means a more personal experience of the region, and the weather — crisp mornings, clear skies, cool evenings — is arguably the most comfortable of the year for walking and exploring. Weather: Cool, clear, occasional rain. Layers recommended. Best for: Harvest experiences, mushroom season, photography, avoiding crowds, food-focused visits. --- Winter (December to March) — Snow, Stillness, and Goderdzi Skiing Winter transforms the highlands. Snow settles over the upper villages and Goderdzi Pass becomes a functioning ski resort — modest by international standards, but genuinely good, and dramatically less crowded and less expensive than Georgia's larger resorts. Down in Keda itself, winter means wood fires, slower days, and a different kind of hospitality — this is when mountain food culture is at its most concentrated, when the preserved butter, dried fruit, and stored honey from the previous seasons come into their own. This is not the season for waterfall chasing or long hikes, but it is, for many people, the most atmospheric time to experience genuine mountain village life. Weather: Cold, snow at higher elevations. Warm clothing essential. Best for: Skiing at Goderdzi, cosy stays, experiencing traditional mountain winter life, avoiding tourist season entirely. --- Our Recommendation If this is your first visit and you want the widest range of activities: come in summer. If you want waterfalls at their most dramatic: come in spring. If you want food, harvest, and a quieter, more local experience: come in autumn.
