Best Waterfalls in Adjara 2026 — Complete Guide

Adjara is one of the wettest regions in the Caucasus. The mountains catch moisture from the Black Sea, the rivers run fast and cold, and the waterfalls — there are dozens of them — drop from heights that would be remarkable anywhere in the world. Most visitors see one. Here is how to see the best of them. --- 1. Makhuntseti Waterfall — The One Everyone Knows Distance from Akutsa: 10km 50 metres. A single unbroken drop into a clear pool surrounded by beech forest. Makhuntseti is the most photographed waterfall in Adjara and it deserves every photograph. The road runs almost to the base — it is accessible in any car, in any season. On the way there is a small market. Stop for honey and churchkhela. On the way back, stop again. Best time to visit: April to June, when the snowmelt brings the flow to its peak. --- 2. Merisi Waterfall — The Quiet One Distance from Akutsa: 12km Fewer people know Merisi. The road ends at a small car park; from there it is a hundred metres through forest to a waterfall that feels genuinely private. There is a small cafe at the trailhead. The waterfall itself is not as tall as Makhuntseti but the setting — narrow gorge, dense canopy, the sound of the water echoing off the rock — makes it memorable in a different way. Go here after Makhuntseti. You will almost certainly have it to yourself. --- 3. Dzenwmani Waterfall — The Accessible One Distance from Akutsa: 7km A hundred metres from the tarmac. No serious walking required. The waterfall drops through a rocky channel into a small pool, and the path to it passes through mixed forest that is beautiful in every season. This is the waterfall for families, for people with limited mobility, for anyone who wants to see something extraordinary without a hike. Dzenwmani is often skipped because it is not famous.
